International students (Joint Programme)
Residence permit student with mobility
Joint Programme students can apply for a "Residence Permit Student with Mobility". The card is valid for 2 years due to the mandatory mobility. The card can be extended if you continue to meet the requirements.
After graduation, you can apply for an extension of the card as holder of the Austrian student residence permit, which allows you to stay in Austria for 12 months to look for a job. More information
Where do I have to apply?
We recommend that you check if you are eligible to apply for a residence permit in Austria (see next question). Should you not be eligible to apply in Austria, you must apply at the Austrian embassy in charge.
Make an appointment as early as possible with the competent Austrian embassy to apply for the "residence permit student". Submit all documents in legalized and, if necessary, also translated form. The embassy will forward the application to the competent office in Austria, where it will be processed. After positive processing of the application, the embassy will contact you and issue an entry visa. You can use this to collect the residence permit from the competent authority in Austria, once all the documents are complete.
Here you will find the documents required for the application process
Can I apply in Austria?
If you, for example,
- are allowed to enter Austria without a visa because of your nationality as a tourist or
- have a valid residence permit in the Schengen area
you can submit the application for the "residence permit student" at the competent authority in Austria.
Please prepare all documents for the application in the country of residence. You will find a list of documents on this page. You have 90 days to apply for the residence permit and also to collect it.
The place where you live is responsible for processing the residence permit. For the first application in Graz you have to send an e-mail to the competent authority with all documents (after arrival). If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.
Do I need insurance?
Yes, for the residence permit student you must take out health insurance that covers all risks in Austria. In most cases this requires you to conclude an insurance in Austria, for example the self-insurance for students at ÖGK. Further information
Note: you may need additional travel health insurance for the visa.
How much money do I have to prove?
Depending on your age, you must be able to prove at least around 7,500 euros (under 24 years) or 13,500 euros (over 24 years) for 12 months in advance. This amount can increase, for example when you arrive with children and/or a married partner. You can find the required minimum amount per month on this page. The University of Graz does currently not award scholarships to finance living expenses for international students.
What documents do I need?
You can find the required documents on this page.
Your documents must to be legalized before you submit the application. There are also some countries where no document certification is required. Do not submit the document until it has been legalized and translated, should this be required.
Which type of legalization you need (apostille, full diplomatic certification, no certification) can be found here.
Apostille
Apostille is a sticker that is usually placed on the back of the original document. If your documents need to be legalized by apostille, please check in the country of issue of the document where you can have the document legalized (for example: Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, court,...).
Full diplomatic legalization
The document must first be legalized by the issuing country, and then additionally authenticated by the competent Austrian representative authority. Only the Austrian representative authority responsible for the country can carry out the authentication. This process can take several months, please consider this in your planning.
