Guest research stays at Uni Graz
Self-funded guest researchers will find helpful information to prepare for their stay on this page.
How to become a guest researcher
If you want to come to the University of Graz as a guest researcher, you must have received an invitation letter from an institute or center of the University of Graz. The decision whether a stay can be realised or not is made by the host department (institute/center).
Characteristics
- Guest researchers have neither an employment relationship with the University of Graz, nor are they enrolled as students.
- They stay at the University of Graz for (independent) research purposes under the consent and responsibility of the host department (institute/center).
- Guest research stays can take place from doctoral level onwards.
- The research stays are self-financed, for example via scholarships/fellowships or during a sabbatical.
Academic supervision
Guest researchers need an academic supervisor who is responsible for the stay. You can find a list of academic staff on the website of the institutes or centers.
How do I find an institute/center?
The University of Graz is organized in 6 faculties:
- Faculty of Humanities (GEWI)
- Faculty of Natural Sciences (NAWI)
- Faculty of Law (REWI)
- Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences (SOWI)
- Faculty of Environmental, Regional and Educational Sciences (URBI)
- Faculty of Catholic Theology (THEOL)
Institutes are assigned to a faculty. You can find the assigned institutes and centers on the faculty website.
There are also some university and faculty-wide areas.
Invitation letter
Invitation letters for guest researchers are issued by the host department (institute/center) including signature and stamp.
Non-EU/EEA nationals need this document for the visa or residence title application.
Duration of stay
Guest research stays can last a maximum of 12 months for legal reasons. Please contact us if an extension of the stay is necessary.
Responsibilities
The host department (institute/center) is responsible for your stay. We support you with questions concerning your arrival and life in Graz and at the University of Graz.
Taxation of scholarships/fellowships
International scholarships/fellowships may also be taxable in Austria. Sometimes scholarships/fellowships are a substitute for income and are considered as income from self-employment. You have to take care of the taxation in Austria and all related processes yourself. It is best to contact a tax advisor.
Guest Researcher Agreement
For stays of 30 days or more, we recommend concluding an agreement. Please contact your academic supervisor/contact person if you have questions.
