Start of work at the University of Graz
We are happy to welcome you to the University of Graz! To help you find your way around, you will find some general information here.
Employment and collective agreement
The Human Resources will be happy to advise you on questions concerning your employment relationship. The employment contract you sign is based on the regulations laid down in the universities' collective agreement. The collective agreement sets out the most important rights and obligations of employers and employees, in particular remuneration, special payments and working hours.
The collective agreement was concluded between the union and the umbrella organization of the universities with the purpose of creating uniform salary and working conditions for as many employees as possible. Works agreements ('Betriebsvereinbarungen') are agreements between the employee's councils and the university management on specific topics and expand on the provisions of the collective agreement.
How to get your employment contract
Once the internal recruitment processes have been completed, you will be contacted by the HR management, as you have to submit documents to finalize the process.
In general, you can only sign the employment contract when you start work. A confirmation can be issued in advance upon request, should you need this for authorities or renting an apartment. Your HR officer will inform you about the procedure.
Third-country nationals must present their Austrian employment visa or residence title in order to receive the employment contract and be able to work. You can find more information here.
Moving expenses
In most cases, you will have to pay for the moving costs yourself. If you do a tax assessment in Austria, you could get part of these costs back as a tax credit. You can find details on this in our tax info sheet and at our annual event.
Account and email address
With the start of your employment, you will receive a personal Uni Graz email address and an account to log-in to computers and the network. The IT representative at your institute or center can request the account for you.
With the staff card you can scan, copy and print, it is also a key card and a library card. You can apply for the card via UNIGRAZonline. After 3-5 working days you can pick up the card at the Central Registration office ('Zentrale Registratur und Postadministration') in the main building.
Social insurance
In Austria, there is a system of compulsory insurance, which means that when you start your employment with the University of Graz, you will be registered for social insurance with the insurance called BVAEB. Austrian social insurance includes health, accident, pension and unemployment insurance. Social insurance contributions are automatically deducted from your salary in Austria.
General information on health and insurance can be found here.
We will send you further information on how to use health insurance when you have registered for welcome services.
