Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs
Here you will find answers to the questions we get most frequently.
What can I study with my previous studies/education at the University of Graz?
We cannot tell you whether or to which study programme you can be admitted with your previous education, because this is checked individually when applying for admission. Therefore, you should first think about what you would like to study at the University of Graz and then submit an application to find out whether admission is possible. You should consider your interests, previously completed studies or school as well as your language skills to come to a decision.
What grade point average do I need for admission?
The grade point average does not play a major role in admission. You must meet the formal and subject-specific requirements for the respective study programme. Formal requirements are, for example, the correct documents including legalization and translation as indicated. Subject-specific prerequisites are checked individually according to your previous education.
Do I have to take an entrance exam?
For most fields of study at the University of Graz, no entrance examination is required. All students who meet the requirements are admitted to the programme.
For some study programmes there is an admission procedure, for these studies only a limited number of students are admitted per year. More information on admission procedures
Some studies have an aptitude test: all students who pass the aptitude test are admitted. The following studies have an aptitude test:
- Secondary school teacher training - more info

I would like to attend the pre-university course, how do I register?
You can only apply for the pre-university course in Graz (VGUH Graz) with a letter of admission from the University of Graz. You must first apply for the desired study programme at the University of Graz.
If it is determined by the Uni Graz that you do not yet have sufficient German language skills, or other subjects are missing (for example, because you have only completed 11 years of school), you can register for the VGUH with your letter of admission. The VGUH costs about 500€ per semester and lasts a maximum of 4 semesters. While attending the VGUH, you do not have to pay any tuition fees at the University of Graz, only the ÖH fee (~22€) per semester has to be paid, in addition to the VGUH fees.
Which visa do I need?
If you want to complete a bachelor's, master's or doctoral programme at the University of Graz, you do not need to apply for a visa but for a residence title, since your planned stay in Austria is longer than 6 months. A visa would only be possible for shorter study stays (e.g. as a free mover or exchange student for one semester). If necessary, you will receive an entry visa to pick up your residence title once it has been approved.
Which residence permit do I need?
You need a residence permit student ("Aufenthaltsbewilligung-Student") for your studies on all levels. You can find more info on the required documents & prerequisites here. You can also get an overview of the process on our website on entry and residence.
If you are working at the University of Graz (for example as a doctoral student with employment contract), this does not apply to you. Please contact us in such a case and we will send you individual information for staff.
Can I apply for the residence title in Austria?
Actually no - only under certain circumstances. For example, if your nationality allows you to enter visa-free as a tourist, or if you already have a valid residence title in the Schengen area. If this is the case, you should prepare all the necessary documents in your country of origin, because you have only 90 days to apply for and collect the residence title.
Do I need to have my documents translated?
The documents must be translated if the original was not issued in German or English. If a translation is necessary, it must be done by a certified translator/interpreter.
What is an apostille?
Depending on the country where your document was issued, an apostille may be required. It is a sticker that is attached to the back of the original document and confirms the authenticity of the document.
What is a full diplomatic legalization?
The document legalization has at least two steps: first, you must have the document leaglized in the country of issue. Then the document must be authenticated by the competent Austrian embassy. It can only be authenticated by the Austrian embassy in the respective country, not in Austria or elsewhere.
Here you can find out which form of legalization is required according to the document's country of origin (use a browser translation tool to see the page in English)
Can I apply for a scholarship?
The University of Graz offers no scholarships for international students to fund their studies. You can search for scholarship opportunities in Austria via www.grants.at, for example.
Please note that you have to fulfill the financial requirements for the residence title when applying for it.
What insurance do I need?
For a residence permit in Austria, you need health insurance that covers all risks in Austria, equal to Austrian social security. It is advisable to take out ÖGK Selbstversicherung für Studierende (self-insurance for students), as this is an Austrian social insurance provider meeting the residence permit requirements. This insurance costs approximately 67€ per month. You can only take out this insurance after arriving in Austria and when you are enrolled as a student. Further information
