Information about doctoral studies at Uni Graz

  1. First collect all the necessary documents, preferably while you are still in your country of origin. The documents may need to be legalized and translated. Pay attention to the language requirements.
Please note: Each field of study and curriculum may have different language requirements. Please inform yourself proactively by talking to your supervisor. You can find the doctorate/PhD programmes available here.
  2. Apply for admission to the doctoral school before submitting the application for admission to the Academic Affairs. It is best to ask your thesis supervisor for assistance.
  3. Submit the complete application online. Your application will be processed by the faculty in charge.
  4. Wait for the result. You will receive an "admission letter." This process may take several weeks.
  5. Enroll in the degree programme with the admission letter.

Please discuss the study programme you should select in the admission process with your dissertation supervisor. You must choose a doctoral programme and indicate the corresponding dissertation subject. Information on doctoral studies and their admission can also be found here: PhD at the University of Graz

The application deadlines vary depending on the study programme - you can find the deadline on the website of the faculty in charge of your doctoral/PhD programme.

Many PhD programmes are offered in English as well as German. Depending on the language you choose, you have to submit a German or English certificate.

  • To study in German, you must be able to demonstrate at least C1 proficiency
  • If you are applying to study in English, you must be able to prove English proficiency.
Please check the minimum language requirements in the curriculum of your PhD or doctoral curriculum!

You will find the required documents on this page.

Depending on the country of issue, documents may need to be legalized by the country that issued them. If legalization is required, you must have the document legalized before submitting the application. For more information on types of legalization, see "legalization".

Your educational documents may need to be legalized, depending on which country issued them. There are some countries that do not require document legalization. If legalization is required, do not submit the document until it has been legalized and translated.

You can find the legalization requirements for educational documents according to country of issue on this page.

Apostille
The apostille is a sticker that is usually placed on the back of the original document. If your documents need to be legalized by apostille, please inquire in the country of issue of the document where you can have the document legalized (for example: Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Court,...).

Full diplomatic certification
The document must first be legalized by the issuing country, and then additionally authenticated by the competent Austrian representative authority. Only the Austrian embassy responsible for the country can carry out this authentication. It is not possible to complete this process in Austria. This process can take several months, please consider this when planning your arrival.

Documents that are not available in German or English must be translated. You must have the documents translated by a professional (court certified translator), e.g. www.gerichtsdolmetscher.at
